Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist Georges Gobet has received a major French press award at the 10th annual Bayeux Prizes for his photo coverage of the conflicts in Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast-based Gobet won the photo prize for his work in Ivory Coast in September and October 2002.
The Bayeux prizes, created in 1994 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the WWII Allied landing at Normandy, are awarded to "journalists from around the world who practice their profession in sometimes perilous conditions to ensure free and democratic information." The awards, which come with € 7600 in prize money, are unique according to organisers in honoring journalists who report on conflicts or on the defence of democratic freedoms. "
Mr Gobet, 50, joined AFP as a photographer in 1979 and has covered Northern Ireland, the African state of Chad, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Israel, as well as major sports events. He also accompanied Pope John Paul II and President George W Bush on various foreign trips. He has been living in the west African state of Ivory Coast for the last two years and has won several prizes for his photographic coverage.
He won this year's top prize in the spot news category of World Press Photo, and also an award in the 15th international photojournalism festival in Perpignan, as well as the 2003 prize in the news categrory of the annual Fuji France and Europe Prize.
